Man Utd 5-4 Lyon (7-6 agg): Player ratings as Red Devils win Europa League epic
UEFA Europa League
Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly making progress in his recovery from an ankle injury as he seeks to return to action well before the end of the season.
Alexander-Arnold has missed Liverpool's last four games since being forced out of the Champions League quarter-final second against Paris Saint-German – including the Carabao Cup final.
The Athletic writes that he was involved in "elements" of team training on Wednesday, rather than the whole session. But it is a positive step forward that points towards being declared fit this month.
The plan is that Alexander-Arnold will be "gradually integrated" back into full sessions moving forward, with Easter Sunday's trip to Leicester City likely to be too soon for him to be involved. But Tottenham Hotspur's visit to Anfield on 27 April is billed as a possible return date.
That could very well be the day that Liverpool seal the Premier League title. The Reds need just two more wins from their remaining six fixtures, starting with Leicester this coming weekend.
Getting his hands on the Premier League trophy when it is presented at the end of the campaign is expected to be Alexander-Arnold's last act in Liverpool colours.
His future is yet to be publicly confirmed, but the England international is widely believed to have agreed – or close to it – a long-term contract with Real Madrid to move as a free agent.
Liverpool have managed to wrap up a new deal with Mohamed Salah, with Virgil van Dijk set to imminently follow suit by extending his own stay at Anfield. Both will see out most, possibly all, of their remaining respective careers on Merseyside. But Alexander-Arnold is in a very different stage of his career, opting for a new challenge while his peak years are still ahead of him.
The 26-year-old has rubbed plenty of Liverpool fans up the wrong way over how the saga has unfolded, especially after admitting he would rather win the Ballon d'Or than team prizes.
